Sex Therapy
Sex therapy plays a pivotal role in addressing a wide array of sexual concerns, and it is often a key component of couples therapy or individual therapy. As human beings, our sexuality is an integral part of our lives, and it deserves the attention and care that any other aspect of our well-being receives. We are here to guide you through this journey and help you rediscover a more profound connection with your physical bodies and sexual feelings.
Why Choose Sex Therapy?
Sex therapy is not just about addressing physical issues; it is about recognizing that sexual health is intimately connected to your overall well-being. It's a journey that empowers you to address a range of sexual concerns and enhance intimacy, both inside and outside the bedroom.

How Insurance Works for Couples & Sex Therapy
Understanding Your Coverage Before You Begin
At Sugar Tree Counseling, we know that starting couples or sex therapy is a big step—and understanding your insurance benefits shouldn’t add extra stress. Here's what you need to know:
Most Insurance Plans Cover Mental Health—But Not Always Couples Therapy
Insurance usually covers therapy when there is a diagnosable mental health condition (like anxiety or depression) being treated. If one partner in the couple has a diagnosis and the therapy is focused on treating that condition, it may be billed under their insurance. This is often called "conjoint therapy with the identified patient present."
Important Note: Insurance companies typically do not cover therapy that is solely focused on relationship issues, communication skills, or sexual concerns—even though those things matter deeply and impact well-being. These sessions are considered “relationship counseling” or “sex therapy” and are often not reimbursable.
What If We Want Couples or Sex Therapy Without a Mental Health Diagnosis?
In that case, we’ll discuss private pay options with you. Many of our clients choose to invest in couples or sex therapy outside of insurance to avoid diagnostic labels and have more flexibility and privacy in their care.
Using HSA/FSA Accounts
Even if insurance doesn’t reimburse for couples or sex therapy, most clients can use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to pay for sessions. We can provide the needed documentation upon request.
Transparency Matters
Before starting, we’ll review your needs and discuss whether therapy may be eligible for insurance reimbursement—or if private pay is the best route. Our goal is to help you feel informed, empowered, and supported in making the right choice for your relationship.
